This is part of a sample illustration that I just finished. The project is a counting book about the subway in NYC––and if it's well-received, maybe I'll illustrate the whole book. I wasn't at all sure how to approach this project until it occurred to me that I might be able to come at it from a creature/character point of view. Then I went crazy. My favorite character is the disgruntled duck. My second favorite is the pink kookaburra in spotted tights.

I love these! Especially the caterpillar with the handbag!
Also the elf shoes on the bird. lol!
For counting purposes, I love that the characters are squished together and overlap. Makes it more like a puzzle game. Fun!
you are incredibly talented!
Thanks, Gina. I'm worried that it's a problem that the characters overlap and are squished together! But so far, can't figure out how to make it subway-ish without characters being squished together.
Mary Ann.
That's adorable!
The overlap/squishyness is part of the charm.
I like the worm best too, but they're all darling. The howling kid is a cute touch too.
I vote for the squish!
Charming, colorful, fun!
Oh, the disgruntled duck is gREAT! IF you end up illustrating the whole book, you can almost do a ... well, an animation sequence. In this one, they're squished.
Train stops, the spring forward. And when all things settle down, we might see there's actually quite a bit of room between them.
Blah blah blah blah. What a super fun work, Linda!!
What booda baby said.
