Hartford: Chapter 3

Last night I sent Mom an e-mail via her Presto machine. It said: Well, after all that, it sounds like Aggles may not be going to Hartford after all. Love, Linda
I attached a picture of three space creatures to add some vibrancy.

Early this morning Mom called. She was concerned about the fact that Aggles might not be going to Hartford after all. "Why isn't she going? What happened?"

I told her I didn't know–I hadn't asked. That these kinds of things were on one minute and off the next. "But she seemed so glad to be going," Mom wailed. "I'm worried now that she may be very disappointed."

p.s. Mary Ann, after I made this face on the sand and photographed it, I was sure that this is what Husbando must look like. Is it true?

Presto (Hartford, con't)

E-mail from Aggles today: So what was Mom worried about? Last night she told me she was very excited and that she hoped I got to go!

(You're telling me. Mom isn't even supposed to remember anything after four seconds have passed.)

E-mail from me to Aggles: She said that she had had a pretty good day around there yesterday. When you first told her, she had been OK with it. But she said later, things changed. When it gets dark and she's by herself, things seem scarier. She thought Hartford must be very far away, and that it might be dangerous. I told her no place was more dangerous than Atlanta, where you already lived! (Bad idea). I told her you'd only be there for a couple of months. (Bad. You had told her weeks.) She thought Hartford was a big city, too big. I told her I'd do some research and send it to her on the Presto, and that the info would be there in the morning when she woke up and it wasn't so dark. Here's what I sent her:

FACTS ABOUT HARTFORD

Mark Twain (1835–1910), moved to Hartford in 1874 and lived in Hartford for a number of years. Mark Twain wrote many of his most famous works in Hartford, including The Gilded Age, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, Roughing It, and his most read and controversial, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

Hartford is the capital of the State of Connecticut. It is located in Hartford County on the Connecticut River, north of the center of the state. As of 2006, it had a population of 124,512.
There were 155,554 people in Chattanooga. (Hartford is smaller than Chattanooga.)

Hartford is home to Elizabeth Park, featuring the oldest and largest municipal rose garden in the country.

But what I want to praise tonight on my blog is: Presto! by Hewlett Packard. Have you heard about it? It's for people who can't or don't want to use computers, but who still like to receive e-mail and pictures. I set one up for Mom a couple of weeks ago. The person who has the Presto doesn't have to do anything. The Presto simply collects e-mail 3 times a day, whenever you have asked it to, and spits it out on 8 1/2" x 11" paper. It takes ink, like any printer. It costs $100.

Dreary

As we were finishing dinner around 9:30, I poured a cup of coffee down the front of my periwinkle shirt, so I was down in the basement throwing a load of laundry in the machine. I heard the phone ring. It was my mom (12:30 her time) calling because she was worried about my sister (age 50) going off to Hartford, Connecticut on assignment.

When I got off the phone, I looked at Tom and growled, "I'm so glad we don't have kids."

Tom: "You are a kid."

Oh well. There was a strange but beautiful light outside earlier this evening; and wondrous fog horns sounding.

Question

Say you had a beloved dog and that you had lived with your dog for fourteen years. You walked with your dog for an hour or two every day, you worked with your dog lying beside you, you cooked nice things for your dog sometimes, you slept near your dog. Then your dog died. What's the best thing a friend could do to bring you comfort? Would it be possible for a friend to bring you comfort?

My Beautiful Hair Stylist

I got a do from Kimberly Givsan at Acme Head & Body this afternoon. Then I met Sal, Pat, and Evie for dinner. I sat by Pat so I could play with his iPhone. Then I lost my parking ticket and had to pay $35 to get out of the Stockton Sutter Garage. All in all, it was well worth it.

Wondering said:
Did she do you a do like the do she has?

Linda said:
Not exactly. (See below. Left to right: Myself and Sal after champagne & snacks.)

Favorite Painters

Sally posted some of her favorite paintings; it made me want to post some of my favorite painters. This is Ida Kohlmeyer's Composition 95-16. Here are some nice examples of her work.

Best of Show

Sarah Ledford is Katy's sister. She won Best of Show at the Greene County Fair for her honey. She sent three different kinds to Tom; and they were displayed on the kitchen counter when I came dragging in.

Homecoming

Tom picked me up at the airport yesterday evening. Exhausted, I couldn't believe how great the air felt. It smelled like eucalyptus, too, even in the parking lot. We drove northwest. The sun was setting; the sky was orange.

"Where would you like to go?" Tom asked.

"Home."

Suddenly, on the horizon I saw the cobalt blue lights of Nordstrom Rack. "Wait! Turn!"

I tried on 20 or 30 pairs of shoes. Finally, finally, I was back in my element. I was so euphoric that I whipped out my camera and planned a shoe contest on the spot. But after shooting the 30th pair, I keeled over and had to be carried back to the car. It was fun while it lasted, though, and a great homecoming. My favorite pair was the 4th pair, 2nd row. Songs About Lunch

I wrote all the songs on the plane from CA to TN. It was lunch time, and Delta Airlines didn't serve lunch–just a bag of peanuts.

Katy shot the CD cover on Market Square Mall after we had lunch. That evening, Mom told me my hair looked stringy and that I should make sure to wash it the next day.

You can order my CD now. Send a large check or money order to me at Mom's assisted living apartment, while supplies last. Not available in stores.

Mindy In Person

I did get to see Mindy! She's completely covered with fur and lives with Gwen.

Back in junior high, I drew a picture of Gwen and me sitting in a booth with a huge plate of nachos between us. I gave the drawing to Gwen. Yesterday we copied the drawing. We went to Durty Nelly's and sat in a booth and ordered a huge plate of nachos. I'm going to try to get the original pencil drawing back from Gwen and post it.

Back Inn Cafe

But Katy, Mom won't drink gin even in 104 degree weather. But she let me order wine. The Back Inn Cafe is one of my favorite restaurants in Chattanooga.

Kidnapping Katy

I kidnapped Katy for lunch yesterday. I'm posting this picture, with a dated newspaper, to assure you that she is well even though it's 104 degrees here. If you really care about her well-being, you will send a bulging envelope of cold cash for cold beer. Send it to Mom's assisted living apartment and address it to my attention. It must arrive before next Tuesday, or else ...

Goodbye

I'm off to TN to visit Mom for a week. Lunch with Katy on Wednesday! I'll get to visit Mindy, too, I hope.

Living on the Edge

After the earthquake at Sally's house last Wednesday, Katy said to her:
Do you ever want to move to more solid ground? 4:12 PM

To which Sally replied:
It's cruel and embarrassing to admit, but earthquakes can be very exciting.
My big disaster fears when I was a kid were: 1. Tidal Waves (in central New Jersey) 2. Tornados There was a painting in an old World Book Encyclopedia, probably W.P.A. era, that I used to torment myself by looking at it. It was so darned scary. One of those pulled both ways things you do to yourself as a kid. "I can't look, I can't look, oh my gosh look at that big black tornado." 6:07 PM

After our walk on the beach today, I looked up and saw this sign. Not only do Tom and I live in earthquake territory, but we live in tsunami territory, too! Train wrecks never did it for me. It's always been tsunamis. I dream about them frequently. Walking home I try to gauge how many feet above sea level our house is.

And as if that isn't enough ... when it's too windy to walk on the beach, often we hit the Coastal Trail. Get a load of the sign that greets us at our halfway mark:

Two Beach Poems

Here are the rules in case you want to make your own beach poem. You can't take anything with you to the beach. You have to use what you find on that particular day and shoot it on the spot. If you don't have a beach, don't worry: you can make your own street poem or woods poem or garage poem.

BlogHer '07: Daydream

It takes a while for me to be able talk about something so meaningful as the BlogHer gathering. So for now I'll just write what I blurted out when my therapist asked me about the conference yesterday:

"Say there was a huge earthquake or other disaster ... this is the way my mind works–and one reason I need therapy ... and that you found yourself trapped in a basement for days on end, maybe weeks on end, with a group of people. This group of bloggers would be the group I would want to be trapped with. It's the one group I'd actually look forward to being trapped with."

Saturday

Low tide was around 10:00 today. I came home with a pocket full of sea glass and a bag of gardenia blossoms from Other Avenues.
Not pictured: super tofu burrito w/ pint of salsa.
