We were both feeling depressed as we stumbled out the door for a walk this evening. Tom's dad is just out of intensive care; and my mom has injured a hip and can't remember how. It was too windy on the beach, so we hit the Coastal Trail.
After three miles, I can feel a definite shift in spirit. I even have a suggestion:
My suggestion: Hey, Tom! Would you like to go see the Annie Leibovitz show at the Legion of Honor tomorrow morning?
Tom: I'd like to, but I have a ton of work to do.
Me: I do too! But we could take just ten minutes and run through it.
Tom: Remember the last time we were going to take just ten minutes and run through the De Young? We ended up running through for three hours.
Me: I know! But the Legion is minutes away, and–aside from these photographs–there's never anything there to look at! I mean, there's never anything in the gift shop.

Walking and Talking at the Same Time

Oh my gosh. First of all this reads like a Little Lulu comic book, which I always loved.
And then, I woke up thinking about the deYoung museum and the cherry blossoms around that Japanese tea garden and the long lines of people there used to be waiting to sit in the tea house and drink jasmine tea and eat little crackers. Do people still do that? (I was thinking about this because Lake Balboa is now in full cherry blossom time.)
I'm so sorry about both your parents and their hard and painful times.
I hope your parents are OK! Sorry to hear they've been having troubles.
It's true it takes three miles to feel a lift in spirits: the same for me at the track.
Looking forward to post on the exhibit. The De Young does seem a bit more fun than the Legion . . . except for lunch!
Sorry to hear about your mom and your father in law. Such things are never easy.
When I still lived with my folks (and was in better shape) I regularly went on Sierra Club hikes at dusk, both on the beach and in the hills above them. Not only were they mood lifters, but they sometimes put me in another world: a misty universe of crashing surf, foghorns, sage, eucalyptus... far away from everyday troubles. Sounds like bad poetry, but it's true.
Sally: That's hilarious about Little Lulu. I remember her!
Have you been to the new De Young? Stunning, whether or not there's a good show. (The gift shops are the best.) I went to the Japanese Tea Garden once with my mom, and have never returned. It seemed so commercial and over-run with people. But probably early in the morning it would be wonderful.
Thanks--I guess getting old is just the way it goes.
Sal: The De Young is MUCH more fun the the Legion--usually. Not today. ...Yes! We had a fun lunch at the Legion tho. And you have to admit, the Legion is in one of the most beautiful spots on earth.
Namowal: So are you in the Sierra Club? What you say is true. May sound like bad poetry, but it's true. I Iove the eucalyptus especially.
Linda,
I used to be in the Sierra club in the mid 90s, when I had more hiking time on my hands.
Sorry to hear about your folks.
I hope a later post is going to say that you went to Annie's show... ;)
