Children of Other Lands

This is the poster that hung on my bedroom wall when I was a kid. That's me, pointing to an Indian girl. (A clue as to why I'm still searching for the elusive Indian bead belt?)

I think it's weirdly wonderful how the painting that hung on Namowal's wall as a child seems to have influenced her work. And after seeing her animations, you can certainly imagine Sally Cruikshank having this poster on her wall as a child.

At the moment, I'm working on a picture that includes 60 or 70 kids from all kinds of different backgrounds.

Do you remember any pictures that were on your bedroom wall when you were a kid?

What a dollface!

I shared a bedroom with my oldest sister, who had a lifesize poster of Joe Namath on the wall.

My older brother had a poster that said "Life is a banquet, and most poor bastards are starving to death." He also had one of a sweet-looking little old lady flipping the bird. And, oh yeah, the Raquel Welch poster where she's wearing an oversized roller derby jersey. I was afraid of his room. It smelled like boy.

Cute photo.
I'm wondering if that's a Mary Blair poster? (As you may know), she's famous four her Disney illustrations (though she worked for other clients too) and her influence on the "It's a Small World" ride.

It seems like if there was anything interesting on paper the paper went on my wall. (Hmm - still true.) Rainbows have been a theme since I was an infant though... I had a big print of a rainbow over a village on a dark blue sky printed on a piece of cloth, and a little plush cloud with rainbow ribbons hanging from my ceiling. I don't draw rainbows much, but I do like to wear stripes...

Namowal, in San Francisco in January I saw a great Mary Blair exhibit at the Cartoon Art Museum!

Lisa: ha! (I remember your comment on the sticker post, about the sticker you had on your door: "When I was a kid I used to have one from Mad magazine pasted across the keyhole on my bedroom door that said, 'Attention peeping toms! Great show here every night at 11:00!' Yeah, I bet I gave a great show at 9 or 10 years of age. : )")

Namowal: I've been dying to find out about that poster. Thanks--it's GOT to be Mary Blair! I think it might have been done for National Geographic(?) Can't find it anywhere online...

Marie: How does it feel returning to your old bedroom on trips home?

Stray G: Wish I had seen that one with you. You might as well be the one living here--you see much more here than I do!

I'm posting the one Dinah's had on her wall since she was four. I notice she didn't take it with her to college.

ps you're the cutest and smartest looking little girl.

I thought I read an obit for Mary Blair about a month ago, but couldn't find record of it checking just now.

Speaking of Mary Blair, are you familiar with the alleged plans by Disney to redo the Small World ride? According to the rumor, the rain forest scene will be replaced by an "up with the U.S.A." scene and characters from Disney cartoons will be added to their respective countries(!)

Her son is livid
I don't blame him

Not surprisingly, my bedroom wall was dominated by a huge...(drumroll..) map! It was of the US and must have been 4x6 ft. I would stand on my bed and study it for hours. When I knew of a relative or friend who was traveling I would imagine their progress as they crossed the country and I would try to figure out where they must be on each leg of the journey. My office at work still has a large map, but it's only a 3x5 ft one. I still waste time studying the roads and places I want to see.

I can't think of a single poster I had on my walls as a child. But I did have a framed Little Bo Peep that was made out of different colored foils. It was given to me by a girl named Lark. Wish I still had it...
