rejected baby illustration with antlers added
Tom is scrambling to find our fax number while on the phone with a client. I hand it to him silently. When he hangs up, he says: "Thank you, Dear."
me: Don't call me Dear!
him: OK. Then don't call me Baby!
me: Baby is OK, but not Dear!
him: (a little perturbed) OK, I won't call you Anything.
me: You can call me Baby or Baby Deer, but not Dear!
Later I mention that his drawings look really good. He says: "Thank you, Dear Baby."
me: You mean Baby Deer.
him: Sorry–I just got the words transposed.
He'll never get it right. Later he called me Bambi.

Whenever Mom would tell Dad to do something, he would answer, "Yes, dear," in a tone that suggested she was being a little pushy and critical and that he must be obedient.
Perhaps it's all in the tone.
and I can't believe that wonderful illustration would be rejected!!!
Sal: You're right. It's that TONE people can't seem to help using when they utter the word "Dear."
as for the illustration: The only things rejected were the eyes, mouth, skin color, and the fact that I had forgotten to put ears on. (The antlers came later). The A.D.'s actually very fun.
I like this cute baby deer with her winsome toothy big smile!
*I don't have semantic reaction to dear, baby, or deer. But, in my experience people who dear-ed me also gave the 3 Cs (cookies, candies, chocolate) -- they could dear me to infinity. :)
